A Christian Approach to Maths & Stats
A Christian approach to mathematics is distinguished from others by our primary assumptions about the nature of reality. We investigate the design, order, reliability and relationships that are established by God for His purposes. In your study of mathematics as a Christian, pay attention to concepts such as infinity, unknown quantities and insolvable equations. Also consider abstractions, negatives and relationships that are easy to conceptualize but hard to apply practically in our present reality. Reflect on these concepts in the context of the so-called boundedness of what is considered scientific by the mainstream intellectual mind set.
In statistics and quantitative methods, pay particular attention to how concepts such as averages and probabilities are used to make intellectual and practical decisions. Consider the place of the individual case in statistical averages in the context of the biblical view of the uniqueness of the individual. What are the spiritual implications of suppressing or sacrificing the individuality of a case in favour of group averages? Similarly, consider what is implied in concepts like confidence intervals and margins of error in statistical decision-making. These draw your attention to how the principle of uncertainty is entrenched in the formal scientific approach.
God’s logic and design transcend our finite scientific rationality. As you make advances in understanding of natural and quantitative sciences, you will develop the ability to address these and similar issues in ways that are truly faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ.
